Movie Rant: Pacific Rim
Being a fan of Guillermo movies I had been anticipating Pacific Rim for a few months with plenty of excitement. I had planned on making it my first IMAX experience, but when I tried to book it, I was unable to see it in 2D. I then chose to attend a screening in Cineworld instead and endure the smaller screen and uncomfortable chairs.
Guillermo did not want Pacific Rim to be shown in 3D, due to miniaturisation that the 3D would create. He wanted the film to show just how gigantic the robots and monsters actually are, but Warner Bros. decided they would still fit 3D on the film.
I'm aware my opinion of Pacific Rim may be biased, based on my love for Guillermo movies and having complete faith in his film directing and producing. I sat down with some chocolate buttons, but after a few minutes my mind told me that chocolate or sweets weren't going to cut it, so I went to purchase one of my favourite snacks of all time; popcorn.
When the film started I felt that my purchase was worth it, I also felt like the stereotypical person gobbling popcorn unconsciously because the film was gripping enough of my attention to make me only realise I was starting to feel sick and then stop gobbling, so Pacific Rim is definitely a popcorn movie, quite literally.
Pacific Rim isn't a film to be taken to seriously, so don't go and see it and expect it to shock, stun and amaze you with deep character development, plot twists and unpredictability. It is a big monster and alien film done right and gives a nostalgic reminder of 80's Japanese monster movies but in amazing quality.
You don't know a great deal about the characters throughout the film, just enough to get by, the film doesn't have time to waste on the past of these characters, so you'll only know and learn the important bits that fit in.
The story itself is predictable, but that's not a bad thing either. I was personally not analysing the story as it went along and trying to predict any potential twists, because I preferred to concentrate more on the action in the film and appreciate the beautiful robot and alien designs that Guillermo had obviously focused a lot into making them look good.
I will also warn potential future viewers of the movie; do not try to work out how things work, I simply referred to it as magic and who are we to work out and point the flaws in something that isn't us? That is another reason why you should not try to think about the why and how in the film.
The script isn't great I admit, and there's one scene that does annoy me in the latter part of my favourite fight and actually made me face palm, but I didn't take it seriously and laughed instead.
I usually have a problem with action scenes in anything, but I could work out most the action in Pacific Rim. I would love to see it again in the cinema so I am able to look at scenes more closely now that I know what to expect, it is not like a Michael Bay film, where the action is going to fast and to violently for me to comprehend what's going on and therefore I disregard the fighting scenes automatically.
I also appreciate the music that went with the film. It fitted very well and I would invest in the soundtrack myself if I could afford to do so.
The aliens themselves are incredible and I appreciate the intelligence they obviously obtain throughout the film that even surprised me a little at some points. It was good to know that these creatures weren't just dumb aliens being beaten up and overpowering their opponents, but actually plan and outwit the robots at some points. They also visually look fantastic and I enjoyed appreciating them and the robots themselves.
One last thing to point out; Guillermo has never produced something so gigantic in every way and it's a large change of movie genre and style for him, I believe he wanted to make a film that brought some nostalgia for him and make it look fantastic as well. I could easily see Pacific Rim as an 80's Japanese movie and it would still be good. So if you really want to enjoy it, then turn on your inner child and let it take over.
